Bird in Hand

Dear Jenny,
I have been searching for a job for a couple of months now and in the beginning, it was moving slowly. Now suddenly I am getting requests for interviews and have one job offer. I have accepted the offer, but really want to continue to interview with other companies because, quite frankly, the jobs sound like they might be better opportunities for me. What do I do?

Sincerely,
Bird In Hand

Dear Bird In Hand,

Congratulations on your new job! Obviously, you are experiencing some very exciting times in your career. It must feel really good to be asked to interview by so many companies and it is a testament to your hard work and great resume!

While it is tempting to continue to interview and explore the other opportunities, I would encourage you to go back to what attracted you to the first company, in the first place. You likely “clicked” with your new boss, coworkers, culture and company as a whole, otherwise you would have never accepted the job. Your new employer is excited to have you on board and are making arrangements for your arrival. They have big plans for you!

One of the absolute worst things you can do, is withdraw your acceptance of an offer. While it may not seem like it, the world is very small and in the world of recruiting is even smaller. You never know when you are going run into the hiring manager or recruiter in the future.

Unless you signed the offer under duress, you should follow through with your agreement for employment with the first company. It is the right thing to do!

Sincerely,
Jenny
