Great Resignation or Great Reckoning?
Dear Jenny,
I’m thinking about leaving my job. For some context, I work a minimum wage job, and it seems like my coworkers are also quitting in droves. We just aren’t being paid enough and we aren’t being treated like humans. Are you seeing this as a trend? Who are the people that are making up the great resignation? What are the reasons most people are leaving?
Thanks,
Minimum Wage Mike
Hey Mike,
Thanks for reaching out. I think you’re onto something with your observation about people leaving minimum wage jobs–I’ve definitely noticed the trend too. It seems like a lot of people who were living on minimum wage before the resignation are now getting pushed down into even lower-wage positions, and many have just decided that they’re not going to take it anymore.
I don’t think it’s just about money though–people are looking for jobs that they can be proud of. And people want a job that will treat them with some kind of respect, which is something they’re not going to find at a minimum wage job.
To be honest, people aren’t really looking for a job in the traditional sense anymore–now they’re more interested in finding some kind of labor that will fit into their lifestyle and meet their needs. People want to make money while having fun. They don’t want to come home stressed out from their jobs (and then go out and get even more stressed about how they’re going to pay their bills).
The minimum wage workforce is not the kind of work that people want anymore–and I think that’s why people are leaving. Sure, it’s still better than having no job at all, but it’s just not enough for most people in this day and age. I think people want something more. They want a job that they can be proud of and get fulfillment from.
Apart from this, people aren’t willing to put in long hours and they’re not interested in punching a time clock anymore. They want more freedom and they’re not afraid to go and find it.
I think you might be seeing this trend because there are so many people leaving jobs like yours–especially younger people, who have typically jumped from job-to-job in the past. With our economy being what it is, people are clinging to their jobs more tightly than ever before, but I think that will change as the economy improves.
I don’t think it’s a huge trend, but I think that people are looking for more–and they’re finding it. I think you might be seeing the result of this desire for change more strongly in your workplace because most people are still too afraid to leave their jobs. I do agree with you though–people are leaving minimum wage jobs and unions alike by the masses.
It’s important to remember that people always want something better, and I don’t think this will change any time soon. People have been pushed around for too long now, so it’s exciting to see them finding their voice and getting what they deserve.
Sincerely,
Jenny
